Happy Spine | Back Therapy Workshop with Geoff Outerbridge & Andrea Robertson

Sitting at a desk, the wheel of a car, or even standing all day for work can be rough on the legs and lower back. Wake up the stiff parts of the hips, hamstrings, and lumbar spine with a stretchy, feel-good slow flow and then release into some yin style stretches to provide more space for the low back to relax.

This practice will present many modifications and points of consideration for practitioners with discomfort in their lower back and Sacro-illiac (SI). This practice will hopefully provide education and awareness to your existing practice and or provide you with options to modify. Props Needed: Two blocks and a strap. Journal or notebook with pen to write down part of practice to have for home routine.

Breakdown of Workshop:

5:30-6:40pm ~ Dr. Outerbridge will lead a discussion on mechanisms of back injuries and types of back pain, psychosocial risk factors for back pain, how to prevent and avoid aggravating disc problems and spine sparing strategies. He will end the discussion with some Q&A.

6:45-7:30pm ~ Andrea Robertson will lead a 45 min yoga practice geared for back therapy. A practical yoga practice you can incorporate in your daily routine to premier a happy spine and prevent injury.

About Dr. Geoff Outerbridge
Dr. Geoff Outerbridge has had a fascination with human anatomy and movement since as far back as he can remember. This passion developed through a diversity of athletic pursuits and teaching a variety of sports including rock climbing, gymnastics, track and field and white water kayaking. He was first introduced to Yoga at an Ashram in the Himalayas in India in 2001 and has continued his yoga practice ever since. Academically his interests led to a B.Sc. in Human Kinetics, a M.Sc. in Neuroscience and Biomechanics, and a degree as a doctor of Chiropractic. He was a teaching assistant in anatomy at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, taught anatomy and physiology at Kine Concept Massage Therapy School, and is currently teaching advanced anatomy for yoga teachers.

Dr. Outerbridge ran a multidisciplinary health clinic in Ottawa for 10 years that provided medical, massage, chiropractic and naturopathic services. As a chiropractor, his focus in practice included the prevention and management of occupational and sports related injuries, including exercise protocols and soft tissue management using Active Release Technique®, and Graston Technique®. Dr. Outerbridge sold his practice in 2011 to help launch World Spine Care (worldspinecare.org), an international, interprofessional nonprofit organization that is bringing full service care for spinal disorders to underserved regions around the world. Part of his work has been to launch the World Spine Care yoga project, a teacher-training program for locals at the World Spine Care clinics around the world. After spending 2 years living in Botswana to set up the flagship clinics, he continues as clinical director and currently treats patients at Integrate Health Care Collective in Ottawa (https://www.integrateottawa.ca). He will be opening a second Integrate Clinic in the Spring of 2020 in New Edinburgh.

There will be no refunds for this workshop.
